Are you planning a trip to Stockholm in 2024? That’s a fantastic choice! Once you land at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), we know you cannot wait to have fun and explore every corner of Stockholm and its surroundings.
Well, wait a minute! Before you explore museums and historical Swedish sites and enjoy delicious food at cheap and affordable restaurants in Stockholm, let’s find the transportation modes connecting to the city center since we want Jnd readers to stay aware of this beautiful Scandinavian capital.
How Do I Get from Stockholm Arlanda to Central Station?
Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is located about 40 kilometers north of Stockholm and has excellent connections to Stockholm and Uppsala Central Stations. If your destination is Stockholm, you can take the Arlanda Express or SJ Intercity Trains to the Central Station.
Arlanda Express
The Arlanda Express train is suitable for those who want to reach Stockholm quickly since this train takes you there in only 20 minutes. For its operation, this train departs every 15 minutes during the daytime and every 30 minutes at night. However, you may know the saying, “Qualities come with a price.” Yup, you will be charged more if you choose this express train. Hence, it would help if you considered it more thoroughly before making an option.
How much do I need to pay for Arlanda Express?
We consistently check for the Arlanda Express fare to give our best answer. The following are the price details that we got on February 27, 2024:
As adults between 26 and 64, you need to pay 320 SEK for a one-way ticket and 600 SEK for a round trip. We highly recommend you purchase a round trip if you return to your home through Arlanda Airport. Yet, if you are traveling with friends or family, the best option is to buy a group ticket since they offer cheaper fares.
There are three types of fares available for group tickets. Unfortunately, Arlanda Express currently only offers tickets for one-way travel. The first ticket type costs around 420 SEK for two people, perfect for traveling with your partner or a friend. However, traveling with two people will cost 520 SEK and 620 SEK for a maximum of four people. By purchasing this group ticket, Jnd readers can save at least 220 SEK for a single trip.
I am on vacation with a child aged 0 to 17 years old. Is my child subject to that rate?
Indeed, we cannot deny that we will bring kids along on family trips, but you don’t have to worry about this. If Jnd readers bring children under 7, they will get a free pass for Arlanda Express. This free ticket also applies to children aged 8 to 17, and an adult above 26 years old accompanies them. However, if they travel alone, they will get youth fares, costing 160 SEK for a one-way ticket and 320 SEK for a return ticket. These youth fares are also valid for youth aged 17 to 25.
SJ Intercity Train: The Perfect Choice to Enjoy Stockholm’s Sights
If you have plenty of time, want to relax, and enjoy traveling in Stockholm while taking in the sights, the SJ Intercity train is a great option. The train takes about 45 minutes to escort you to Stockholm Central Station, and the ticket prices are much lower than the Arlanda Express, ranging from 160 SEK to 235 SEK, depending on departure time. For its operation, the SJ Intercity train runs every 20 minutes from Stockholm Arlanda Central Station.
Despite the low cost, this SJ train can be a good choice if you are traveling alone and are over 25 years old, as Arlanda Express offers much better deals if you are under 25 or traveling with your friends or partner as they may offer group tickets.
How do I book SJ Intercity tickets at Arlanda Airport?
You can purchase these commuter train tickets at the official SL and UL counters at the information desk in the arrival hall of Arlanda Airport Terminal 5 or at Arlanda Central Station. However, we highly recommend purchasing them through the SJ official website.
How Do I Get from Arlanda to the City?
Suppose we have previously discussed how to access the city’s central station. We will now explore the transportation alternatives that can take you from Arlanda to Stockholm. The capital city of Stockholm offers many different transportation options for tourists, including public transportation, airport buses, taxis, private cars, car rentals, and even helicopter rentals. These public transportations are very affordable and easily accessible for Jnd readers. Let’s discuss them in more detail.
Public Transportation: Budget Friendly with SL Tickets
If Jnd readers want to experience the local vibe and have a budget-friendly vacation, the best option is to use public transportation. Stockholm has many public transportation options, such as commuter trains, metro, trams, buses, and ferries, which can be accessed with a single SL ticket.
The SL ticket is available for 42 SEK for a single trip and 175 SEK for 24 hours. By purchasing this ticket, you can experience and explore every corner of Stockholm and its surroundings, and you will be accompanied by SL public transportation. However, you should note that the SL ticket is not valid for trains to and from Arlanda Airport, so you must pay an additional fee to use the trains.
Jndlens’ Budget Travel Tips
We know that some of you are choosing a budget-friendly option. Hence, we share our secret travel tips to save money and only use one SL ticket. Before that, you must ensure you have already purchased and activated the SL ticket.
- Exit the airport: First, you exit and walk to the “Sky City/Terminal 5” bus stop in front of Arlanda airport’s Sky City or Terminal 5 arrival hall.
- Using the bus: Once you arrive at the bus stop, you must get on bus number #583 or #579 with the destination Märsta station. Jnd readers will have about a 20-minute journey to reach Märsta station.
- Transfer to the commuter train: At Märsta station, you will need to change to commuter train #41, which heads to Älvsjö, Stockholm City, or Södertälje Centrum. This train will take you to Stockholm City Station (your last stop) in about 40 minutes.

Stockholm Airport Bus: Affordable and Convenient Travel Options
When exploring Stockholm, we don’t just use public transportation instead! For a convenient and budget-friendly alternative to reach the city center, you must consider airport buses such as Flixbus, Flygbussarna, and VY bus4you.
Flixbus: A Budget-Friendly Option
Are you looking to save a few kronor? Flixbus is your best friend! This direct service will take you from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm City Terminal, saving you time and money. You can find Flixbus stops conveniently located in Terminals 2 and 4. The journey usually takes about 35-45 minutes, with buses running between 08:50 and 22:45. Flixbus sells tickets starting at 70 SEK for one way, and we highly recommend booking online to get the best price and avoid queues.
Flygbussarna: Frequent and Convenient
Do you need more flexibility? Flygbussarna offers frequent departures, running every 20 minutes from morning to midnight. This reliable service gets you to the city center in about 45 minutes, making it an excellent choice for avoiding long waits. Ticket prices range from 119 SEK to 209 SEK for a one-way journey, and Flygbussarna offers discounted tickets for children and special group rates for up to four people. We recommend purchasing your ticket online, but you can get it directly from the driver using your card or Viator for added convenience.
VY bus4you: An economical option
VY bus4you is another cheap option, although it is less frequent. Reaching the city center takes about 45 minutes, and tickets start at SEK 108. However, it would be best to remember that this bus only runs six times daily, so your flexibility may be limited.
Travel in comfort and style
You can also consider a taxi or private transfer for a luxurious and comfortable arrival. These services save you the hassle of finding public transportation and take you directly from the airport to your destination. Finding a taxi in Arlanda is easy. You need to leave the airport and look for available taxis there. However, booking private transportation in advance will add a touch of extravagance to your travels and allow you to agree on the cost to avoid any possible surprises. Be aware that taxis and private transportation are more expensive than public transportation. It is especially true during rush hours or when traffic is heavy.
VIP Way: By car
After arriving at Arlanda Airport, would you like to rent a car? It is a good idea, giving you much more privacy. However, we also recommend this alternative if you plan to visit other Swedish cities after Stockholm because, in reality, you won’t need it in Stockholm due to its easy access to public transportation. On the other hand, parking fees for cars are expensive.
If you want to rent a car, it is easy to find one at Arlanda Airport. All the car rental companies have a branch at Arlanda Airport so you can take the Swedavia bus there. However, a simple way to book a rental car is to use the form on this website.
For the more adventurous Helicopter charter:
There is nothing wrong with trying a helicopter ride for those who love adventure. This option is a short ride, taking about 15 minutes to Stockholm, and is a fantastic adventure. A helicopter ride is a luxurious way to enter the city, although prices vary depending on the company and your destination. With this option, you’ll get a fantastic view of Stockholm, making it a memorable way to get started.
Find Your Best Route Between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm City
It is essential to decide how to get to the center of the city. Here are a few things you need to think about:
How much you want to spend
To save money, you can use public transportation or Flygbussarna. However, time is of the essence for you. In that case, the Arlanda Express is the fastest option, followed by Flygbussarna and then taxis, since public transport usually takes a little longer.
Getting where you want to go
Taxis and private transfers will pick you up and drop you off where you want to go. However, if you take the train or the bus, you may have to walk a little.
Number of people in your group
If you’re traveling with friends or family, sharing the cost of a taxi or private transfer might be cheaper. However, using a group ticket will also save you money. Therefore, consider how many people will travel with you.
After considering all your possibilities, you are ready to start your Stockholm adventure! Whether you are here for business or leisure, Stockholm awaits you with open arms and plenty to see and experience. We wish you a great trip!
